College planning by grade: do the right things, at the right time
Most college stress comes from doing senior-year tasks as a freshman or discovering senior-year tasks in October of senior year. Each guide below covers what genuinely matters that year, a seasonal checklist, common mistakes, and the questions worth asking a counselor, plus what you can safely ignore.
9th grade
A low-pressure starting guide: explore interests, build habits, keep a record. No deadlines live yet, and that's the point.
10th grade
Explore careers and majors seriously, pick junior-year courses on purpose, and start the affordability conversation at home.
11th grade
The building year: a balanced school list, affordability research, visits, testing where relevant, and recommendation groundwork.
12th grade
The execution year: applications, essays, FAFSA, scholarships, comparing offers, and not missing a single deadline.
The through-line
Every year has the same three questions at different depths: What fits me? Why does it fit? What do I do next? A freshman answers them with curiosity, a senior with applications. Beyond Maybe asks them at your grade's altitude, see how the planning tool works, or jump into the college match quiz.
Turn this into your plan
Beyond Maybe builds a dated, grade-appropriate task list from your answers, and a one-page brief for your counselor.
