About Beyond Maybe
Beyond Maybe exists because college planning talks down to students, hides its math, and sells anxiety. We built the opposite: a free tool that starts from a student's own priorities, shows its work, and says “I don't know” when it doesn't know.
Why we built it
Rankings answer a question nobody asked (“which college is most prestigious on average?”). Sticker prices scare families away from schools they could afford. And most tools quietly invent what they don't know, a default budget here, an assumed hometown there, then present the result as personal. Students deserve better inputs for one of the biggest decisions of their lives.
Who it's for
- Students in grades 9–12, including the freshman with no idea, the athlete wondering about recruiting, the artist weighing portfolios, and the senior staring at deadlines.
- Families, especially first-generation families navigating this without a map. The money guidance assumes nothing about what you already know.
- Counselors, students arrive with a one-page brief: their list, budget, deadlines, and the questions they need help with, so 15 minutes goes further.
Our philosophy: no rankings hype, no pressure
- Your priorities lead. There is no universal best college, only better and worse fits for what you said matters.
- Honesty over flattery. Categories like “reach” compare your record with published admissions data. They are honest reads, never probabilities, and admission is never guaranteed.
- Unknowns stay unknown. Skip a question and nothing is invented. “I don't know yet” is a valid answer at every step.
- Grade-appropriate pace. Ninth graders get exploration, not deadlines. Pressure isn't a feature.
- Every claim has a source. Costs and outcomes come from federal data; estimates are labeled and explain their assumptions. See every source and how the matching works.
Who's responsible
Beyond Maybe is an independent product; the team behind it maintains the content on this site and reviews it on the dates shown at the bottom of each page. We don't sell student data, we don't take money from colleges for placement, and no school can pay to look better here. Corrections: hello@beyondmaybe.org.
